Above, a 1934 plaque from the Big Apple Night Club at West 135th Street and Seventh Avenue in Harlem. Discarded as trash in 2006. Now a Popeyes fast food restaurant on Google Maps.

“‘Once weapons were manufactured to fight wars. Now wars are manufactured to sell weapons!’—Arundhati Roy” was posted on Twitter by Aatif Afzal on May 26, 2015. The saying is usually credited to Indian author Arundhati Roy, but it’s not known when she said it first.
   
“Once weapons were manufactured to fight war but now war is manufactured to sell weapons” is a slight variation (with singular “war”) that was posted on Twitter by Amynullah on December 9, 2015.
