Bears (New York Institute of Technology teams)
The New York Institute of Technology has three locations: Manhattan (near Lincoln Center), and Old Westbury and Central Islip on Long Island.

The NY Tech teams are named the "Bears" because...well, probably because they just couldn't think of a better name. "Bears" on the Upper West Side?

NYIT has three campuses in the New York metropolitan area. Two are on Long Island, a suburban region east of New York City. The Dorothy and Alexander Schure Old Westbury campus is nestled among several former estates in the historic Gold Coast region of Nassau Countyî–¸ north shore. The Central Islip campus is located on Suffolk Countyî–¸ south shore, just minutes from several Atlantic Ocean beaches. The third NYIT campus is located in the New York City borough of Manhattan, just a few blocks from Lincoln Center and Central Park.

15 May 1987, New York Times, section D:
The New York Institute of Technology women's program began six years ago when Patty Taylor, a long jumper from Bay Shore, L.I.; Amy Lindenburg, a high jumper from Glen Head, L.I., and Mary Pokalsi, a triple jumper from East Meadow, L.I., met Coach Pete Zinno.

''There were just a few events for women then, but meet directors were encouraged to add more as women began turning out in larger numbers,'' said Zinno, who has been the track coach at New York Tech since 1973.
(...)
Zinno's female runners have won the last five E.C.A.C. team competitions - three indoors and two outdoors. And if his main runners perform well, Zinno believes the Bears have a good chance to continue their string of E.C.A.C. victories.

6 March 1990, Houston Chronicle, sports, pg. 7:
Junior Rob Howard pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and striking out nine Monday to lead the Rice Owls to a 5-1 victory over the visiting New York Tech Bears at Cameron Field.

29 March 1998, Times Union (Albany, NY), pg. E14:
Pitcher Becky Makway scattered five hits and slugged an RBI triple to pace NYIT (2-0, 9-10) in the opener.

In the second game, Kari Bergman had three singles to lead the Bears to victory.
