Cowboy Coffee

“Cowboy coffee” is primative, strong coffee. You don’t dilute it with milk or sugar. See the humorous citations below.

(Historical Dictionary of American Slang)
cowboy coffee n. (see quot.).
1943 J. Mitchell McSorley’s 68: He tells people that he lives on “air, self-esteem, cigarette butts, cowboy coffee, fried-egg sandwiches, and ketchup.” Cowboy coffee is black coffee without sugar.

16 June 1898, Los Angeles Times “The Rough Riders” by W. J. Rouse, pg. 10:
THE COWBOYS’ COFFEE MILL. (Illustration—ed.)
(...)
Who, of all the dwellers in cities, ever saw cowboys grind coffee? They have expedients of their own, to meet all their requirements, and their method of grinding coffee is original with them. SO is the roasting, for the matter of that. They haven’t any coffee mills, A coffee mill is an unhandy thing to carry and they haven’t any use for machinery anyhow. If they can’t get coffee ready roasted, they buy it green, and roast it in tin pans, over the embers of the campfire. When roasted and while it is still hot, the pans are set upon the ground, in a hard, level place, and the grinding begins. The photograph shows the process perfectly. The big six-shooter comes out of its holster, is grasped by the barrel, and a tattoo begins with the butt of the weapon on the coffee berries, until they are pounded as fine as desired. And the six-shooter is loaded and usually half-cocked, all the time. The process, however, has never gained great popularity with thrifty housewives.

12 February 1927, Zanesville (Ohio) Signal, pg. 9:
ZANE GREY PICTURE
WITH JACK HOLT TO
CLOSE THIS EVENING

Proudly wearing his insignia of “The Order of C. C. D.,” Jack Holt recently returned to Hollywood from a ten day location trip in the Sierras, where he had repaired with a company of 150 for scenes in his current Paramount picture, Zane Grey’s “Man of the Forest,” closes at the Imperial tonight.

Lest you haven’t heard, “C.C.D.” stands for cowboy coffee drinkers. Until now the recipe for cowboy coffee has been closely guarded. Jack gives it to a waiting world:

Throw four pounds of coffee into a gallon of cold water and put the can on an open fire. Stir the coffee viciously with a stick until all the grounds are wet. Then allow it to boil. When the coffee sinks to the bottom of the can, your drink is ready.

To test whether it’s really done, drop a claw hammer or length of lead pipe in. If the article sinks, it’s not cowboy coffee. Being too weak, it falls under the head of actor coffee.

30 March 1933, Thomson (IL) Review, pg. 3:
Some cowboys who were performing in a rodeo in Madison Square Garden were bewailing the fact that they couldn’t get “cowboy coffee” in the big city. An eager Broadway restaurateur begged for the recipe. This is what one of the ten-gallon hatters told him.

“Add one pound of coffee to two gallons of water, boil two hours. Then drop a horse shoe into the pot. If it sinks the coffee ain’t done.”

3 November 1940, Washington Post, “Grand Canyon Visitor Finds Its Grandeur Still Evokes a Solemn Mood” by Fay Attichson, pg. AM9:
Carl made cowboy coffee and we ate box lunches.

22 January 1942, Lowell (Mass>) Sun and Citizen-Leader, “Baering Down” by Bugs Baer, pg. 21:
Of all the wonders of New Mexico the thing I remember most is cowboy coffee.

Scientists from the Smithsonian Institution of Rockology investigated a meteor crater on the ranch. The crater was an acre round and 10 feet deep. They found it was caused by a chuck wagon cook emptying the coffee grounds.

It’s against the forestry laws in sixteen Western states to empty a coffee pot any place but in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado.

Cowboy coffee is stronger than the Atlantic cable, blacker than a mule’s bedroom and hotter than a comet’s tail.

One drop of cowboy coffee will waterproof a fence post. Pour a cup of it into a prairie dog village and rattlesnakes, owls and gophers will light out for high ground. Cowboy coffee is sublimate corrosive of concentrated venom and is so bitter it can be sweetened by steel fillings, ground glass and plaster of paris.

Before a cowboy drinks his coffee he fans it for three days with his hat. Then he pours it into the Rio Grande thirty miles south of Taos, New Mexico. He saddles his pinto pony and rides seven days and seven nights until he meets the Rio two hundred miles nearer the Mexican border.

Then he dips his tin cup in the Rio Grande and gets his cowboy coffee buck. Even then he has to dilute it with cyanide. Some day I will tell you more about cowboy coffee.

12 April 1946, Middletown (NY) Times Herald, “A Good Cup of Coffee” by Bugs Baer, pg. 12:
The worst coffee made outside of Europe is cowboy coffee. The only thing that keeps the high morality down are the dents in the old battered tin pot. It is not the glare of the campfire that keeps the wolves off at night. It is the smell of the cowboy coffee.

Yet bad coffee hot is better than good coffee cold.

22 July 1952, Los Angeles Times, pg. B1:
Finding them all in a calm state (we were not) we made some quick cowboy coffee and turned on the radio to learn the extent of the earthquake.
