Dear Leader

North Korea’s Kim Jong-il has been called “Dear Leader Comrade” (Chinaehanun Jidoja Tongji) since the end of the 1960s. The title of “Dear Leader” has also been applied—not endearingly—to the American presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama by those who believe that they are dictators who demand blind allegiance (similar to Kim Jong-il).

George W. Bush has been called “Dear Leader” since at least March 2003 and Barack Obama has been called “Dear Leader” since at least September 2008 (before he was elected president). The term “Dear Leader” can be applied to any autocratic leader, not just the leader of a country.

A similar derogatory expression for a chief executive is “El Presidente” (indicating a banana republic dictator).

Wikipedia: Kim Jong-il
Kim Jong-il, also written as Kim Jong Il, born 16 February 1941 (Soviet records) or 16 February 1942 (North Korean records), is the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). He is the Chairman of the National Defense Commission, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the ruling party since 1948, and the Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army, the fourth largest standing army in the world. In April 2009, North Korea’s constitution was amended and now implicitly refers to him as the “Supreme Leader”. He is also referred to as the “Dear Leader”, “our Father”, “the General” and “Generalissimo”. His son Kim Jong-un was promoted to a senior position in the ruling Worker’s Party and is heir apparent.

A Filial Reverence
Mr. Kim is referred to ubiquitously as “the great leader” and his son as “the dear leader,” and all the country’s accomplishments, down to details of agricultural and archeological work are attributed to the “on the spot guidance” the two Kims have given during tours of the country.

For outsiders, the Dear Leader title is laughable.
