E-Z Pass
"E-Z Pass" (or "E-ZPass") lets you go through bridges and tunnels without stopping. Your plate is automatically recorded and you'll get a bill, but the system is designed to save time and trouble.

Many people (especially from out-of-state) put clear plastic covers over their plates and are shocked to receive $65 fines for that. E-Z Pass is one reason why it's illegal to cover license plates, even if it's a clear plastic that was intended simply to protect the plate.

Wikipedia: E-ZPass
Eā€‘ZPass is an electronic toll collection system used on most tolled roads, bridges, and tunnels in the Midwestern and Northeastern United States, as far south as North Carolina and as far west as Illinois. The E-ZPass Interagency Group (IAG) consists of 38 member agencies in operation within 16 states, which use the same technology and allow travelers to use the same transponder on toll roads throughout the network. Since its creation in 1987, various independent systems that use the same technology have been folded into the E-ZPass system, including the I-Pass in Illinois and the NC Quick Pass in North Carolina.

E-ZPass is an electronic toll collection system, which takes cash, coins and toll tickets out of the toll collection process. Instead, drivers establish an account, prepay tolls and attach a small electronic device to their vehicles. Tolls are automatically deducted from the prepaid account as an E-ZPass customer passes through the toll lane.

E-Z Pass to Start at Hudson River Tunnels
By DAVID M. HALBFINGER

Just after midnight tonight, an electronic cordon around New York City will be complete when the E-Z Pass system is switched on at the toll plazas of the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. For the first time, commuters will be able to drive to and from the city by any route without having to dig for dollar bills, scrounge for coins or hold up traffic asking for a receipt.
