EuroStash (developing a basketball player in European leagues)

A “EuroStash” (or “Euro stash”) is when a National Basketball Association team drafts a player to play in the European leagues (like a minor league baseball farm system) until that player is ready to play in the NBA. A “EuroStash” doesn’t always involve a European player who is stashed in a European league; the player could be from South America, Africa or even North America.

“Eurostash” has been cited in print since at least May 2003. The basketball term does not mean a stash of the monetary currency of euros.

I am thinking that, because of the depth of this draft in 3rd tier players, that Joe keeps the pick, and takes either a Euro to stash away (think Diaw, Khyrapa or maybe even Anderson V.), a hike-schooler (Perkins, Lang, or Charlie V.), or perhaps a backup PG (I would love to see Atkins gone). Realisticly Detroits pick next year should be not be better than 20 next season, so you should really take a chance and keep it. It’s a small risk, but I would lean toward the Eurostash method.

The Spurs have plenty of Eurostash under developement.
My guess is they are looking to match up with Detroit now.

“Eruo-Stash Hone Skills for NBA Debuts
Overseas players await millions while training for U.S. pro league

NEW YORK - You’ve heard of “Euro-trash,” those high-living, European rich kids who spend most of their time at the beach — waiting for the latest check from their parents’ trust funds.

Now get ready for the “Euro-Stash,” those high-scoring, European rich kids who spend most of their time on the court — waiting for the first check from the NBA.

With the continuing success of international players in the NBA and league general manager’s desire to maximize their financial investment, NBA teams have quietly developed what is essentially a strategic reserve overseas — players who were drafted but never signed, players who were “stashed” overseas.

BARCELONA — When it comes to finding NBA talent in Europe, the Eastern Conference is admittedly a step or two behind the West.

With EuroStash, Nets Emulate Spurs
by Net Income on Jun 29, 2012 6:17 AM EDT in 2012 NBA Draft
With the selection of two 6’10” European big men, the Nets were not looking at this fall. They were looking long term and they hope they can emulate the success of the San Antonio Spurs who’ve made a habit of drafting European players low and then letting them develop overseas. The Spurs could have three such Euros in camp this year.
