“Friday Night Lights” is the title of a 1990 book by H. G. Bissinger about the 1988 football season of the Permian High School Panthers, of Odessa, Texas. The book was made into a 2004 film.
 
The 2006 television series takes place in fictional Dillon, Texas.
 
The term “Friday Night Lights” for high school football possibly existed earlier, but it certainly became a popular term with the publication of the book.
