Grunning (running + gunning)

Texas Governor Rick Perry (Republican) was jogging with his daughter’s dog, in February 2010, when Perry spotted a coyote about to attack the dog. Perry got out his gun and killed the coyote with one shot.

State Senator Kirk Watson (a Democrat from Austin) made fun of the story in May 2010 with his own story, titled “My Really True Secret…with Guns and Kittens.” Watson made up a word for jogging with a gun—“grunning” (running + gunning).

Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, in his letter to constituents takes a riff on Rick Perry’s jogging story. As you and the nation will recall, the governor told the AP last week that he was out jogging with his daughter’s young labrador retriever in February when a coyote came out of a wooded area and threatened the pup. Perry said he pulled his .380 Ruger with a laser pointer and killed the “wily” coyote. He also said he left it for mulch.

Here is the “wily” Watson’s version of his own encounter with danger:

Grunning with the Kitties
So anyway, I’m running with my gun (“Grunning” is the technical term). And as I sometimes do, I stopped in at the Town Lake Animal Shelter to adopt some kittens.

Austin Legislator Kirk Watson Is Pretty Funny

So, as everyone now knows, Rick Perry shot a coyote with a gun. While running. Maybe he stopped to shoot him. I’m unclear. Anyway, he shot a coyote.

Well, State Sen. Kirk Watson revealed in a letter to constituents that Perry is not the only one that can run and gun. In fact, he coins a term for it: “grunning.”

Watson’s new word
What do you call it when you run with a gun? As my colleague R.G. Ratcliffe reported on Texas Politics, Democratic state Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin coined a word for it as he poked fun at Perry’s nationally-noted account of killing a coyote with his laser-sighted pistol while jogging (Perry said he was protecting his pup). Watson spun a competing dramatic tale of popping numerous threatening giant rats with a .44 Magnum as he jogged with a clutch of adopted kittens. He called it “grunning with the kitties.”
