“If a bug won’t bite it, why should you? Go Organic”

“If a bug won’t bite/eat it, why should I/you?” is a slogan of the organic foods movement. If a bug doesn’t like it, that could be because the plant is loaded with chemicals.

“If a bug won’t eat it, I doubt a human would” has been cited since at least 1996 and a humorous song titled “If A Bug Won’t Eat It, Why Should I?” is from 1999. Food author Michael Pollan listed “If a bug won’t eat it, why would you?” in the 2009 New York (NY) Times as one of his food rules.

Michael Pollan Wants Your Food Rules
By TARA PARKER-POPE
March 9, 2009, 9:40 am
Writer Michael Pollan, author of the best-seller “In Defense of Food,” has gained a passionate following by encouraging us to change the way we think about food. But for his next project, he wants your help.
By Michael Pollan
I’d like your help gathering some rules for eating well. My premise is that culture has a lot to teach us about how to choose, prepare and eat food, and that this wisdom is worth collecting and preserving before it disappears.

I want to create a compendium of such rules, across cultures and also time. Some of the rules readers have sent me so far are specifically about navigating the modern food landscape: “It’s not food if it comes to you through the window of a car.” “Don’t eat at any restaurant of which there is more than just one.” “A snack is not the same thing as a treat.” “If a bug won’t eat it, why would you?” and so on.

If A Bug Won’t Bite It, Why Should You? Going Organic…
If I was rich, 95% of what went in my mouth would be organic.  It’s frustrating how much money organic food is and the fact that I can’t afford to buy most of it.  I wish I could support our organic farmers more than I do.  I can only take the money I have and stretch it out as much as I can and when it comes to buying organic… it doesn’t go very far.
