Jumbleberry Pie (Jumble Berry Pie)

"Jumbleberry” (or “jumble berry") is a term indicating a mixture of berries; there is a “jumbleberry pie,” but other food items have also used the word. “Jumbleberry” has been cited in print since at least 1987.

A similar term—“bumbleberry”—has been in use since at least the 1950s.

Ingredients
For 2 recipes pâte brisée:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 stick (6 tablespoons) cold unsalted butter, cut into bits
2 tablespoons cold vegetable shortening
1/4 teaspoon salt

3 cups blackberries, picked over and rinsed
3 cups blueberries, picked over and rinsed
2-1/2 cups raspberries or other summer berries such as red currants or boysenberries picked and rinsed
1/3 cup cornstarch
1-1/2 cups sugar plus additional for sprinkling the pie
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into bits
1/4 cup half-and-half

peach and brown sugar ice cream as an accompaniment if desired

No, a jumbleberry isn’t a new variety—rather, it’s a mixture of our favourite juicy summer berries. You can substitute blackberries for all or some of the raspberries. This filling is a good use for the end of summer harvest.

Filling
2 cups (500 mL) blueberries
2 cups (500 mL) raspberries
2 cups (500 mL) strawberries, sliced
1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar
1/4 cup (50 mL) water
1 tablespoon (15 mL) grated orange zest
