Metroplex (Dallas/Fort Worth nickname)

To celebrate the 1973 opening of the new Dallas/Fort Worth airport (then the nation’s largest), a new name was used. In 1972, the North Texas Comission trademarked “Metroplex” and “Southwest Metroplex” for the area around the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth. The trademark expired and the “Metroplex” term is now in general use.

Other Texas imitation names include “Petroplex” (Midland/Odessa, cited in print since at least November 1975) and “Centroplex” (Belton/Killeen/Temple, cited in print since at least February 1977).

Wikipedia
The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex encompasses the metropolitan divisions of Dallas–Plano–Irving and Fort Worth–Arlington, within the U.S. state of Texas. The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is officially known as the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Area, a title designated by the U.S. Census as of 2003 and consists of twelve counties in North Texas.

According to the U.S. Census 2000, the metropolitan area had a population of 5.1 million (though a July 1, 2005 estimate placed the population at 5.8 million). The Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington MSA is the largest metropolitan area in Texas and the entire South, the fifth largest in the United States, and the 52nd largest metropolitan area in the world.

7 December 1972, New York (NY) Times, pg. 101 ad:
An airport as big as Manhattan
A federal official was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal as saying that our new airport will do for our area “what the railroad did for the development of Chicago.”

The man is right. Because when the new Dallas/Fort Worth Airport opens in Fall, 1973, it will be the nation’s largest. And the most efficient. This $500 million facility will spread over 17,000 acres. That’s 3 times as big as Kennedy, and larger than Manhattan Island. All just 20 minutes from downtown Dallas or Fort Worth.

9 December 1979, Dallas (TX) Morning News, “Metroplex is nowhere unles you live here” by Steve Blow, pg. 6A:
As “metroplex” infiltrated the local vocabulary, it also began to spread geographically. It wasn’t long before Midland-Odessa was calling itself “the petroplex,” and the Temple-Belton-Killeen area dubbed itself “the centroplex.”

29 December 1985, Dallas (TX) Morning News, “‘Golden Triangle’ name game’s goal is rejuvenation” by Steve Blow:
In so doing, the area joins ranks with the Metroplex (Dallas-Fort Worth), Petroplex (Midland-Odessa) and Centroplex (Temple-Killeen) among others.
