Poop (three-point shot in basketball)

New York Knicks basketball player Shawne Williams was known for his three-point accuracy during the 2010-11 NBA season. On the Knicks blog Posting and Toasting on December 5, 2010, Thelonious Dunk wrote “Poopin’ from the corner!” and then corrected with “Erm, poppin’.” “Pop” means a shot, as in the basketball phrase “he stops, pops and it drops,” popularized by longtime broadcasters Steve Albert and Marv Albert.  Other posters on the blog picked it up and a Shawne Williams three-point shot was called a “poop.”

“Poop” has had limited use (even among New York Knicks fans), but a New York magazine writer used the term in a Shawne Williams article in December 2011, over a year later.

Wikipedia: Three-point field goal
A three-point field goal (also known as three-pointer) is a field goal in a basketball game, made from beyond the three-point line, a designated arc radiating from the basket. A successful attempt is worth three points, in contrast to the two points awarded for shots made inside the three point line.

Rise and shine, poopcats! Your Knicks are in the lovely city of Toronto to face the Raptors this afternoon. After winning 8 of their last 9, the Knicks should have a winnable slate of games over their next four.

Better Know a Knick: Shawne Williams
By Seth Rosenthal

He’s converted ten of his twelve three-point attempts, and done so with a uniquely inert, low-rise shooting form that has been affectionately dubbed (like all good things, via typo) “pooping from the corner.” Shawne does more than just poop in corners, though. (See? It’s a delightful phrase to use.)

True indeed. Shawne’s propensity to poop in the corner is well documented and, when you reflect on it, that’s really been Wil’s spot as well.

The Knicks Will Probably Have a New Player Today

The first is Shawne Williams, the three-point shooting “swingman” most famous for his corner treys, or “poops,” as Seth might put it.
