Red Taco

Red tacos are a specialty at the Casa Manana in Wichita Falls (established 1947). Red tacos also can be found at Benny’s Cafe in Del Rio and Border Burgers in Eagle Pass. One citation below states that red tacos are typical of Monterrey, Mexico.

Casa Manana is a resturant in Wichita Falls, TX. They serve a beef taco. The taco shell is made of corn. The shells are thick and reddish in color. Anyone know how they might make these? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

I live their crispy red tacos! They are the best in town and the burgers are good too. Although the service takes a while, it is a family owned business and the people there are nice.
Pros: Good Food, Inexpensive
Cons: Small place, Bad parking

It is a crying shame the red tacos at Casa Manana in Wichita Falls did not make the list. They are between crunchy and soft and the shell’s consistency is part of the charm. I no longer live in ’The Falls,’ but I make darn sure to stop by and get some every time I visit.

We were hungry after hours of discussion so Dr. G suggests we go to have some red tacos. We drive several kilometers away to a street stand—somewhat surprising me as I did not really think he would frequent such an establishment. He says he goes there often.
 
The red tacos are typical of Monterrey and I’ve only had them here. The taco shells are fried first in a type of red chile to make the taco shells red – hence the name. Shredded cabbage, a type of slightly mashed potato and diced tomatoes were added as filling. That’s it. A hot red sauce could be added to taste. Five tacos make an order or orden. Cueritos or pickled pork finds were added to the side. Very tasty on a cold, rainy day. Better than the expensive Rey de Cabrito we went to yesterday.

My lunch buddy and I headed down Eighth Street Monday with every intention of going to eat lunch somewhere else, but when my car went past Casa Manana, it seemed to switch into autopilot. Before I realized what was happening, we were making a right at Eighth and Ohio and picking a parking spot behind this historical Wichita Falls dining landmark.

Sixty years in business says a lot about the staying power of Casa’s menu, and they have one signature item to which I believe they can attribute their success - the red taco with wine sauce. I went around the building trying to see if anyone knew any history surrounding the red taco, and the closest I can get is - it’s a secret. No one knows how Casa gets this puffy delicacy to turn red, but I don’t care how they do it, I just hope they keep doing it for 60 more years. The red taco has been imitated around here locally, but never duplicated. You just can’t improve on perfection - yes, it’s that good!
 
Casa Manana is not a restaurant for the calorie conscious, so little, skinny girls beware. There are a couple of lighter items on the menu, but if you can resist the red tacos, you’re doing better than me! I can’t resist them, don’t want to and I order the Senorita plate every time I go. The Senorita plate comes with one cheese enchilada, one nacho with queso and one big, beautiful red taco. When calories matter, I guess I’ll just have to teach my car to steer the other direction.
