“Shut up, Brooklyn”

The snarky website Gawker.com published a story on February 22, 2008 titled: “Report: Williamsburg Not As Cool As It Was, Earth Revolves Around Sun.” TheHonJudgeSmalls commented: “Can we get a new ‘Shut up, Brooklyn’ tag?” A Gakwer glossary published on July 9, 2008 included “Shut up, Brooklyn.” Gawker explained:

“People in Brooklyn can be so annoying! They always go on and on, in various media outlets, about their kids or their gentrification or how so great their awesome neighborhood is. Shut up!”

The expression has been almost exclusively used by Gawker and people who read that website.

Shut up, Brooklyn: People in Brooklyn can be so annoying! They always go on and on, in various media outlets, about their kids or their gentrification or how so great their awesome neighborhood is. Shut up! (Coined by commenter TheHonJudgeSmails.) It’s a similar phenomenon amongst college kids, as evidenced by our “Shut Up, College” tag.
