Wedgie (sandwich)

“Wedgies” are a creation of Fox Pizza Den, a franchise based in Murraysville, PA. “Wedgie” is cited in print since at least 1983; Fox’s Pizza Den describes it as “a sandwich served on a pizza crust instead of a bun.” There are wedgies with turkey, chicken, ham, roast beef, and other main ingredients, topped with lettuce, tomato and mayo.

Other restaurants (mostly in Pennsylvania) also have “wedgies” on the menu.

John the Greek Food Concessions (Bethel Park, PA)
Our Story
John and Connie have always been involved in the food business. In the year of 1978, they had a gyro shop and their local church asked them to be a part of their greek food festival to sell gyros. This gave John an idea to try to take the concept of the gyro sandwich and introduce it to a larger public.

Antonino’s is a welcome oasis in Oakland’s fast-food badlands. Open for a little more than a year at 3614 Fifth Ave. across from Children’s Hospital, it bills itself as a pizza and Italian restaurant, serving pasta and seafood dishes in addition to familiar student fare. My companion and I shared some of each.

Splitting a steak wedgie ($6 small, $8.25 large) allowed us to order the lasagna ($7.95), too.

They also serve wedgies. For those who aren’t sure, a wedgie is not a prank having to do with underwear, but rather a hoagie baked in pizza dough. They come in two varieties, steak ($7.25) or Italian ($7). Besides meat, customers will find onions, tomato, lettuce, cheese and dressing in the package. Continuing on the “trite” theme, I must say that upon observing another customer’s steak wedgie…oooh-la-la!

What exactly is a “wedgie sub”?!
Sounds like something .. dangerous.

I think they use pizza dough instead of a bun and sometimes they can be dangerous!

Has anyone ever had a “wedgie”?

I just ate something pretty amazing…It was from a Fair stand called a Wedgie. It consisted of ham, pepperoni, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, with Italian dressing baked into pizza dough. It was kind of like half stromboli, half hoagie/sub. And, it was pretty amazing! The stand was called John the Greek. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this delicacy?
