We Need Your Cash (WNYC nickname)

WNYC is New York City’s non-profit public radion station. WNYC has had so many fund drives that some have dubbed it “We Need Your Cash.”

NBC movie critic Gene Shalit used “We Need Your Cash” in 1981. WNYC listener Richard Mitnick gives coinage credit to Mary Daly, who worked at WNYC from 1975-2002.

Wikipedia: WNYC
WNYC is a non-profit, public radio station in New York City, broadcasting on 820 AM and 93.9 FM. WNYC is a member station of National Public Radio and carries a mixed news and varied music format on two radio frequencies. The station is known for its nationally-syndicated news and culture programming and its Internet radio broadcasts. WNYC reaches more than one million listeners each week and has the largest public radio audience in the United States.

The WNYC stations are co-owned with classical music outlet WQXR-FM (105.9 MHz.), and all three broadcast from studios and offices in the TriBeCa section of Manhattan. WNYC’s AM transmitter is located in Kearny, New Jersey, and WNYC-FM’s transmitter is located on the Empire State Building in New York City.

NOTES ON PEOPLE; New Meaning for WNYC
By ALBIN KREBS AND ROBERT MCG. THOMAS
Published: May 19, 1981
Gene Shalit, the NBC movie critic, gave more than a fund-raising pitch when he was asked to say a few taped words on behalf of New York City’s radio station, WNYC.

He came up with a slogan that seemed especially appropriate for a commercial on a noncommercial station.

’‘I finally figured out what WNYC stands for,’’ Mr. Shalit said - ‘‘We Need Your Cash.’’ Mr. Shalit came to the taping well quipped. Asked what NBC stands for, he replied, ‘‘Nothing But Chaos.’’

“I wouldn’t do things the way they’re doing it right now; that’s why I left,” said Mary Daly, who has a 28-year history with the station. Ms. Daly started out at WNYC in 1975 as an assistant to then–station manager Mary Nichols. Until four years ago, she worked as a consultant to the station on, ironically, its fund-raising campaign to gain independence from the city. Ms. Daly isn’t the only one to decamp from WNYC.

And, hey, send money. Join up. This is Public Radio. WQXR is owned by WNYC, an acronym for We Need Your Cash (shades of Mary Daley and good old times)..
It has been a pleasure.
