Yankees (Staten Island baseball team); Baby Bombers
The Staten Island Yankees are the Class A farm team of the New York Yankees. (See the "Yankees" entry above.) The team began playing in 1999 and has a website (http://siyanks.com).

The "Brooklyn Mets" were instead named the "Brooklyn Cyclones." The "Staten Island Yankees" could have been the "Staten Island Ferries," but that thankfully never came to be.

The nickname "Baby Bombers" (see "Bronx Bombers" above) was quickly informally attached to the team.

14 January 1998, New York Times, "What Staten Island Needs, Mayor Says, Is Baseball," Pg. B3:
But, for one day at least, visions of a stadium in Staten Island overshadowed issues of labor and airports. Asked what the team might be called, Mr. Molinari said, ''The Staten Island Yankees has a nice ring to it.''

21 September 1998, New York Daily News, pg. 4:
Giuliani's edifice complex includes budgeting $20 million each for the Brooklyn and Staten Island ballparks. A new Queens home for the Mets, with a retractable roof and field, also is on the drawing boards.

If all goes well, the Brooklyn Mets and Staten Island Yankees could meet in the 2001 E-ZPass series for the New York-Penn League title or the Staten Island Ferries could face the Brooklyn Egg Creams for the Atlantic League crown.

If it goes moderately well, the Staten Island Ferries could play the Atlantic's Bridgeport Bluefish, while the Brooklyn Mets battle the New York-Penn League's Erie Seawolves.

17 June 1999, New York Daily News, pg. 123:
The Staten Island Yankees, the Yankees' newest farm team, opened up their New York-Penn League season last night with a 4-3 loss to the Oneonta Tigers.
