“A neutrino walks into a bar…” (bar joke)

“A guy walks into a bar…” is a typical form of what has been called the “bar joke.” The neutrino bar joke has two forms.

The common “bar joke” form was popular in 2008 and 2009. “A neutrino walks into a bar. The bartender says ‘We don’t serve neutrinos’. Neutrino replies ‘Oh - I was just passing through…’” was cited on Twitter on November 29, 2008. Brian Malow, self-proclaimed as “Earth’s Premier Science Comedian,” popularized the joke in a November 2009 video. While on a comedy-themed NPR’s Science Friday on April 1, 2011, Malow said that he was the first tell the neutrino joke.

“A neutrino walks through a bar” is a shortened version of this joke.

The reverse “bar joke” form became popular in September 2011. “‘We don’t allow FTL neutrinos in here’. ‘A FTL neutrino walks into a bar’” was cited on Twitter on September 22, 2011. A Los Angeles (CA) Times blog told the joke on September 24, 2011:

“We don’t allow faster than light neutrinos in here, said the bartender. A neutrino walks into a bar.”

Wikipedia: Neutrino
A neutrino (/nuːˈtriːnoʊ/ or /njuːˈtriːnoʊ/) (denoted by the Greek letter ν) is a lepton, an elementary particle with half-integer spin, that interacts only via the weak subatomic force and gravity. The mass of the neutrino is tiny compared to other subatomic particles. Neutrinos are the only identified candidate for dark matter, specifically hot dark matter.

Science comedian Brian Malow jokes that a virus is “the ultimate David and Goliath” when compared with humans. He then rattles off a series of science-related jokes. “Schrodinger’s cat walks into a bar, and doesn’t.”

Two Scientists Walk Into A Bar

IRA FLATOW, host:
This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I’m Ira Flatow.
(...)
FLATOW: There was one that came in: A neutrino walked into a bar, and the bartender says: Sit down and stay - make yourself at home. He said: No, I’m just passing through.
(Soundbite of laughter)

Mr. MALOW: Well, now, that one, I have to - I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I actually came up with that one.

FLATOW: Did you?

Mr. MALOW: I did - I was doing a show - I was asked to do a show with the Koshland Science Museum in D.C. about infectious disease once. I’ll show you the connection between neutrinos and infectious disease eventually.

But because of that, in trying to come up with material about infectious disease, I decided to write some bar jokes like those that we’re talking about. So I did a couple about infectious disease and viruses. And they were so popular in my act that I wrote more of them. And it’s my most popular video on YouTube.

You’ll note that most of these tweets follow a certain joke structure. But because nothing is funny if you overthink it, we’ll just leave it at that.  Here are some of our favorites:
