“Waiter, I can’t find any oysters in this oyster soup.”/“Would you expect angels in angel cake?”

A restaurant joke is:

Diner: Waiter, I can’t seem to find any oysters in this oyster soup.
Waiter: Would you expect to find angels in angel cake?

The joke involved “chicken pie” instead of “oyster soup” in 1941. An “oyster stew” version was printed in 1971 newspapers.

Customer—“Waiter, what did I order?”
Waiter—“Chicken pie, sir!”
Customer—“There’s no chicken in it”
Waiter—“That’s right, there’s no chicken in it, sir.”
Customer—“Then why call it chicken pie?”
Waiter—“That’s all right. There’s no angel in angel cake, is there?”

1 July 1971, Big Basin Herald (Muldrow, OK), “Grins and Chuckles,” pg. 20, col. 1:

Waiter: Well, you would not expect to find any angels in angel-food cake, would you?
