Austex or AusTex or Aus-Tex (Austin, Texas)

“Austex” (or “AusTex” or “Aus-Tex”) is a name formed from “Austin” and ‘Texas.” Walker’s Austex Chile Company existed in Austin from the 1910s (“Austex” is trademarked from 1930) until it was merged into the Frito Company (now Frito-Lay) of Dallas in 1961. “Austex” products are now distributed by Castleberry’s Brands. Austin’s Republic Square was formerly dubbed “Chili Square” because of the Austex Company.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the name “Austex” became popular again and was used by several Austin companies.

Where was “Chili Square”?
It was where Republic Square is now, framed by Guadalupe, 4th, San Antonio and 5th Streets. Walker’s Austex Chile Company had its office at 310 San Antonio and its plant at 500-502 W. 5th Street from the 1920s to the 1950s. Also, up until the 1920s, the blocks surrounding this square were populated by a large number of Mexican-Americans.

AUSTEX FIRM
IN 25TH YEAR
Chili Manufactory
Celebrates

AUSTIN—W. F. Gohlke, vice president and general manager of Walker’s Austex Chili company, Austin, is celebrating, with his co-workers, the 25th anniversary of the operation of the company under his management.

The beginning of this company launched the then new American industry of commercial chili and tamale manufacture, and Mr. Gohlke commemorated the growth of this Austin industry to its rank as one of the two largest of its kind in the world, one whose output of its typical food products leads all others.
(...)
Walker’s Austex Chili company does business in 42 American states, and in the 25 years, Mr. Gohlke, who visits each distributor in each state twice a year, has become widely known as “Austin’s amabassador” to the nation. Chili and tamales, as known here, are strictly American “concoctions,” and although termed Mexican dishes, there is strictly no market for them in Mexico.
