Barstro (bar + bistro)

When Bar Artisanal opened in Tribeca (268 West Broadway, between Avenue Of The Americas & Lispenard Street) in 2009, owner Terrance Brennan remarked that it was a “barstro”—a cross between a bistro and a bar. Bar Artisanal has since closed.

Woody McGee’s Barstro opened in 2011 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The term “barstro” remains little-used.

CAN’T WE JUST CALL IT A RESTAURANT? From a press release about Terrance Brennan’s takeover of the failed Trigo space, which will reopen as Bar Artisanal on Tuesday, April 21: “Concept: Bar Artisanal is a Barstro—a cross between a bistro and a bar…Bar Artisanal will feature inventive cocktails….an accessible wine list; and dishes that are $20 and under.”

The name recognition of Artisanal should help counteract those problems.

Brennan is calling the new restaurant a “barstro”—a combination of bar and bistro—but the menu looks far more appealing than that term.

You’ll recall Terrance Brennan told us about his Artisanal spinoff some time ago. PR is now calling it a “barstro,” i.e. a cross between a bistro and a bar.
