Bear O’Clock (bear + beer o’clock)

“Bear o’clock” (bear + beer o’clock) means that it’s time to be a financial bear (a pessimist on the financial markets). The term “bear o’clock” was coined by Bob Janjuah, co-head of Cross Asset Allocation Strategy, Nomura Holdings, Inc., in January 2014.

“Bob Janjuah: ‘Tick Tock, Not Yet Bear O’Clock’” was published on the financial blog Zero Hedge on January 23, 2014. “Bob Janjuah’s Prompt Return: ‘Is It Bear O’Clock Now?’” was published on Zero Hedge on January 27, 2014.

Tick tock, not yet bear o’clock

Hopefully by now you will all be done with reading the many “year ahead” type pieces so beloved of the sell-side. I will instead stick to my “running narrative” by updating my last note from early November 2013.

Bob Janjuah’s Prompt Return: “Is It Bear O’Clock Now?”

Define irony: literally hours after one of the world’s most renowned bears says it is “not yet bear o’clock”, markets have their worst daily crash in months. So what is Bob to do? Why issue a follow up opinion of course…

Bob’s World: Is it bear o’clock now?

It’s funny how – after not writing for over two months – I put a note out last week (highlighting some key levels) and within hours of publishing we have gone on to test and break some of these key levels.
