A “beerita” (beer + margarita) is a drink composed of beer, tequila, and lime juice or limeade or lemonade. “Beerita” appears to have been cited in print in 2005, but was popularized by the Boston (MA) Globe article on May 23, 2007, “Bartender, we’ll have a round of beeritas.” The beerita maker said that she had first heard of the drink in Minneapolis.
 
Other beer concoctions include “beertail” (beer + cocktail) and “beertini” (beer + martini).

ARLINGTON—At a Cinco de Mayo party earlier in the month, Joanne Moran was in the kitchen mixing up batches of drinks. Spread out in front of her were tequila, lime juice, ice cubes, and a pitcher. But she wasn’t making margaritas.
 
Instead of the triple sec that is an integral part of the traditional margarita recipe, Moran was using light beer. She was making a cocktail that she calls a beerita. She first encountered beeritas at a party in Minneapolis, where she lives. The drink caught on in her group because it’s refreshing, especially during the summer as something to sip at a barbecue.

Another partygoer is more impressed. “I don’t like beer,” says Linda Karam of Cambridge. But she concedes that she likes the lime and beer combination in the beerita. “This is my second one,” she says, holding up a glass.

Somehow a drink craze that’s been sweeping the nation — for years! — has escaped my noticed until recently. It’s the beerita — a frozen margarita with a bottle of beer stuck upside down in it, so the beer dribbles into the margarita. The earliest mention of it I found in a quick web search is 2007, when it was appearing in Minnesota, Florida and Boston; who knows where and when it was actually created. Anyway, a colleague had one in Grapevine, in a restaurant called Esparza’s. It’s also been spotted at Katy Trail Ice House, Yucatan Taco Stand in Fort Worth, and Place at Perry’s, the subject of my latest review. There I had a chance to sample it.

Drinks Made Easy: How to Make a Beerita

First, in your salted rim beer glass filled with ice, pour your Corona (or lager). Try not to let the head get too high. If it does, let it settle for a minute. Next, pour your 1 1/2 oz. of tequila. You can choose whichever one you want but we don’t recommend using any of the “top shelf” tequilas. Finally, add your 1/4 cup of frozen limeade. Stir until it dissolves completely. Garnish with your lime wedge and there you have it, A Beerita.
