“Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh”

“Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh” is a slogan of the New England Brown Egg Council of Augusta, Maine. The trademarked slogan (first used in February 1982) was made into an advertising jingle played throughout New England.

All brown eggs in the United States are not necessarily local eggs. After a 2010 salmonella scare involving eggs from Iowa, the New England Brown Egg Council re-used the slogan in a press release:

“‘Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh’ is a well-known phrase in New England. Consumers can also be confident that their New England brown eggs are safe. Most of New England’s brown eggs are produced in Maine…”

27 March 1983, Boston (MA) Globe, “An uproar over an egg’s color” by Denise Goodman, pg. 1:
The regional preference for brown eggs, suggested by the council’s slogan that ” brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh,” stems from the belief…

25 February 1985, Bangor (ME) Daily News, “Maine Agriculture” by David Bright, pg. 13, col. 4:
Southern eggs are said to be involved because they are suffering economic losses due to a high-quality marketing program that has convinced New Englanders brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh eggs. In response, the southern eggs are being trained in methods of suntanning to darken their pale white shells and allow them to infiltrate the brown egg market. Maine brown egg growers have counterattacked by expanding their advertising camapign, teaching consumers how to indentify these bogus brown eggs by looking for the two white spots left where the tanning eggs forgot to remove their sunglasses.

Maine Chapter of the New England Brown Egg Council Releases Statement on Maine Egg Safety
The following is a statement from William Bell, Executive Director of the Maine Chapter of the New England Brown Egg Council.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 23, 2010
The following is a statement from William Bell, Executive Director of the Maine Chapter of the New England Brown Egg Council.

“‘Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh’ is a well-known phrase in New England. Consumers can also be confident that their New England brown eggs are safe.

Most of New England’s brown eggs are produced in Maine and as the Food and Drug Administration embarks on nationwide inspections of egg farms and Congress looks to learn more about the situation that occurred in Iowa, consumers deserve to know what has been happening on Maine’s egg farms. Not a single brown egg has been associated with the egg recall in the news. But the Maine Chapter of the Brown Egg Council – which does not include DeCoster Egg Farm – acknowledges and regrets the recent egg recall and supports measures to keep food safe.”
