The New York Jets lost to the New England Patriots on November 22, 2012, by the score of 49-19. The lowlight of the game for the Jets came when quarterback Mark Sanchez ran into the rear end of Jets offensive lineman Brandon Moore; the ball was fumbled and returned for a Patriots touchdown.
 
“BUTTFUMBLE!” appeared almost immediately on Twitter (as well as “butt fumble”). ESPN has regularly played the clip as the “Worst of the Worst” of highlights. A poster, “KEEP CALM AND DON’T BUTTFUMBLE,” was made.

Mark Sanchez’s Butt Fumble

One particularly miserable aspect of my thanksgiving was watching the Jets lose miserably at home to the Patriots. As a Jets fan, there was nothing more embarrassing than watching quarterback Mark Sanchez run into the backside of guard Brandon Moore, fumble the football, and then have it returned for a Patriots TD.
 
Although I am disgusted as a Jets fan, this situation intrigues me because of the unique physics involved. Sanchez’s kinetic energy is converted into rotational kinetic energy when his feet keep moving forward but Moore’s butt stops his upper body. Sanchez then hits the ground with such force that he fumbles the football.  In order to better understand the physics involved and partially vindicate Sanchez, I want to know how much force was exerted on Sanchez by the ground forcing him to fumble.

That unfortunate play on Thanksgiving night will likely go down as the defining play of the Sanchez era in Jets history.
 
Now, it has been immortalized in the classic cinematic art form known as the silent film.
 
It’s appropriately titled “An Unfortunate End.”

The Mark Sanchez Butt Fumble is Still ESPN’s Worst of the Worst Play as We Approach Training Camp

ESPN does many good things, and many annoying and not-so-good things. I think we have to agree, though, that successfully trolling by having the Butt Fumble continually up as the Worst of the Worst nominee every week since it occurred is alongside Outside the Lines and 30 for 30 productions among the network’s finest work.
 
Some Jets fans are annoyed that the run continues and would like to end it. We are now up to 33 weeks and counting–a Ken Jennings-like run–since the Butt Fumble became a thing. This week, the Butt Fumble goes up against Carly Rae Jepsen. In early voting, the Butt Fumble is again winning in a landslide.
