“Dressage horses dance really well for having two left feet”

“Dressage” is an equestrian sport where horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements. Dressage is sometimes called “horse ballet” and a clumsy dancer is said to have “two left feet,” so there have been obvious dressage jokes.

“I have two left feet, so do these horses so why can’t I dance as well as them? #dressage” was posted on Twitter by Jill Booth on August 9, 2012. “Great performance in the dressage - that horse dancer’s gold medal was a hell of an achievement, given that he’s got two left feet” was posted on Twitter by Liverpool: Then and Now later on August 9, 2012. “Dressage horses dance really well for having 2 left feet” was posted on Reddit—Oneliners on May 22, 2019.

“Why can’t dogs dance?”/“Because they have two left feet” is another “two left feet” animal joke.

Wikipedia: Dressage
Dressage (/ˈdrɛsɑːʒ/ or /drɪˈsɑːʒ/; a French term, most commonly translated to mean “training”) is a highly skilled form of riding performed in exhibition and competition, as well as an “art” sometimes pursued solely for the sake of mastery. As an equestrian sport defined by the International Equestrian Federation, dressage is “the highest expression of horse training” where “horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements.”

I’m boggled how they got those horses to dance in the dressage at the olympics, it’s supposed to be impossible to dance with two left feet

Do dressage horses wear dancing shoes? And how do they perform the moves with two left feet?
