"Friendly as a Texas smile” is mentioned in the Cool Slang website, but the saying isn’t very old. “Friendship” has been the official Texas state motto since 1930. “Friendly as a Texas Smile” has been cited in print since only about 2008.
Other Texas “friendly” expressions include “Texas friendly spoken here,” “Friendly City” (Amarillo nickname) and “Friendly City” (Austin nickname).
The Handbook of Texas Online
STATE MOTTO. The word Friendship was adopted as the Texas state motto by the Forty-first Texas Legislature in February 1930. The word was probably chosen because the name Texas or Tejas was the Spanish pronunciation of a Caddo Indian word sometimes translated to mean “friends” or “allies.”
