“Golf is deceptively simple and yet endlessly complicated”

American golfer Arnold Palmer (1929-2016) wrote “My Game and Yours” in Sports Illustrated on July 15, 1963, which opened:

“Golf is deceptively simple and yet endlessly complicated. A child can play it well and a grown man can never master it. Any single round of it is full of unexpected triumphs and seemingly perfect shots that end in disaster. It is almost a science, yet it is a puzzle without an answer. It is gratifying and tantalizing, precise and unpredictable; it requires complete relaxation and total relaxation. It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening—and it is without doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”

“Golf is deceptively simple and yet endlessly complicated” has been frequently quoted.

Wikipedia: Arnold Palmer
Arnold Daniel Palmer (September 10, 1929 – September 25, 2016) was an American professional golfer, who is generally regarded as one of the greatest players in professional golf history. He won numerous events on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, dating back to 1955. Nicknamed “The King”, he was one of golf’s most popular stars and its most important trailblazer, because he was the first superstar of the sport’s television age, which began in the 1950s.

18 July 1963, Decatur (IL) Review, “Sports in Review” by Forrest R. Kyle, pg. 13, col. 2:
Arnold Palmer is writing a five-part series in Sports Illustrated titled “My Game and Yours,” It’s fine reading because he tries to show the game is a lot simpler to play than most people make it.

It is simpler, certainly, than Arnie’s delightful definition of golf with which he begins the first article:

“Golf is deceptively simple and yet endlessly complicated. A child can play it well and a grown man can never master it.

“Any single round of it is full of unexpected triumphs and seemingly perfect shots that end in disaster. It is almost a science, yet it is a puzzle without an answer.

“It is gratifying and tantalizing, precise and unpredictable; it requires complete relaxation and total relaxation. It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect.

“It is at the same time rewarding and maddening—and it is without doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”
