The National Hockey League began its trademarked “Hockey Is For Everyone” (HIFE) program in 1999. The program offers children of all backgrounds—especially inner-city children—the opportunity to play hockey.
 
The NHL continues to use the slogan. A magazine headline in April 2013 was: “NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman Says Hockey Is For Everyone, That Includes Gays.”
