Hoop-and-the-Harm (a basket and a foul shot)

If a basketball player scores a basket, but also gets a foul shot for a three-point play, that player gets “the hoop and the harm” or “the hoop and some harm.” “A hoop and some harm” has been cited in print since at least 1992.

5 APril 1992, Detroit (MI) News, “Burwell: U-M breathes easier after victory,” pg. 10A, col. 4:
The kids were used to doing it all on their own, but now here was Voskuil waking them up with a hang-gliding jumper in the lane. A hoop and some harm. Voskuil sinks the free throw with 5:41 left and the Wolverine were up, 61-58.

16 January 1995, Gettysburg (PA) Times, “Mountaineers sweep Long Island” by Dave Eichler, pg. B3, col. 1:
... Michael Watson got the hoop and some harm to put the Mount comfortably back in the lead, 66-50, with 1;29 remaining.

Cause normally Clay can take you outside and knock down the 20 foot jay, as well as drive you all the way for the hoop-and-some-harm.

30 March 2001, Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN), “Duke Blue Devil: The Main Main, Jason Williams,” pg. 13N:
Strong legs are the key to Williams’ leaping ability and excellent balance. While other guards are writhing on the floor, Williams is bouncing away with the hoop and the harm.

5 May 2004, Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN), “Hassell’s hot hand was an early lift” by Kent Youngblood, pg. 11C:
Trenton Hassell putting the ball on the floor, attacking the basket, getting the hoop and the harm.
