If a basketball player scores a basket, but also gets a foul shot for a three-point play, that player gets “the hoop and the harm” or “the hoop and some harm.” “A hoop and some harm” has been cited in print since at least 1992.

The kids were used to doing it all on their own, but now here was Voskuil waking them up with a hang-gliding jumper in the lane. A hoop and some harm. Voskuil sinks the free throw with 5:41 left and the Wolverine were up, 61-58.
