“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less”

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less” is a saying that has been printed on many images It has frequently been credited to Irish author C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), but he never said it. American Evangelical Christian pastor Rick Warren used the saying in a 2002 book, but he didn’t coin it.

“Don’t think less of yourself, just think of yourself less” was said in 1990 by Ken Blanchard, American author of The One Minute Manager. Blanchard probably deserves credit for the “humility” saying.

“Humility. I read it from a book my father gave me and I say it every day to myself. Humility doesn’t make you think less of yourself, it just makes you think of yourself less.”

KAVITA KANHAI, 17, Lake Howell High School. “The best way to encourage civility is to be a good neighbor yourself. Some of the best people are those who serve the community. Be humble. Don’t think less of yourself; think of yourself less. I learned that at church and have put it to good use in school and elsewhere. I’ve been a student leader in church, which has a big youth group. I spend a lot of time talking to newcomers, reaching out. I’m also involved in a lot of service activities.”
