“I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way” (joke)

American comedian John Stewart said on The Jon Stewart Show:

“I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land.”

It’s not known when Stewart first said it, but it was quoted in the Pittsburgh (PA) Post-Gazette on December 8, 1994. The joke quickly became popular and has been included in many collections of Thanksgiving sayings.

We’re going to invite the neighbors to dinner, murder them, and take their land.
