“I give the eclipse one star”

How does one rate an eclipse? How many stars? “I score the eclipse, minus one star” was posted on Twitter on March 20, 2015.

Reviewers of the August 21, 2017 solar eclipse were more generous. “Of course. The Eclipse is one star by definition” was posted on Twitter on August 21, 2017. “I give the eclipse one star ★☆☆☆☆ (one big star.. like a sun)” was another post on Twitter. “The eclipse, eh.. one star” was posted on Reddit—Oneliners. The Daily News (New York, NY) also gave the eclipse only one star.

Wikipedia: Solar eclipse
A solar eclipse (as seen from the planet Earth) is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and when the Moon fully or partially blocks (“occults”) the Sun. This can happen only at new moon when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured.

A one-star review: The Daily News rates the lackluster solar eclipse

We had high expectations for the solar eclipse of 2017. Marketing materials for the highly anticipated phenomenon promised a spectacular sight: the very popular, life-sustaining sun we all know and love, being blocked for a few minutes by the plain, humble moon.

Turned out, the summer’s biggest blockbuster was a major disappointment, one that will hopefully not recur for many years.
