“I love cooking with wine—sometimes I even put it in the food”

“I love cooking with wine—sometimes I even put it in the food.” This popular quote has been attributed to French chef Julia Child (1912-2004) and to the film comedian (and lover of the bottle) W. C. Fields (1880-1946). There is no evidence whatsoever that either Child or Fields ever used the quotation.

The quotation is cited in print by at least 1996. In 1999, someone wrote that the saying was on a refrigerator magnet.

Other sayings about cooking with wine are “I tried cooking with wine. After 5 glasses, I forgot why I was in the kitchen” and “Never cook with wine you wouldn’t drink.”

I stared blankly at the site for about fifteen minutes, at which point I finally spotted a quote by W. C. Fields:

“I cook with wine; sometimes I even put it in the food.”
