“I spent four years in college and didn’t learn anything. Double majored in psych & reverse psych”

American actor, writer and comedian B. J. Novak told this joke in his stand-up comedy act by at least 2003:

“I learned nothing in college. It really was kind of my own fault. I had a double major—Psychology and Reverse Psychology.”

The joke has been reprinted many times, often without credit to Novak.

6 December 2005, Boston (MA) Globe, “Class Reunion: Schoolmates from Newton meet again in The Office” by Christopher Muther, pg. C13:
It was his acerbic humor and ability to throw a slow-burning stare that led to his current job in “The Office.” He (B. J. Novak—ed.) was the first actor hired for the show before Steve Carell after executive producer Greg Daniels caught his stand-up routine.

“He started off with this joke where he said, `I just graduated from college, but I didn’t learn much. I had a double major. Psychology and reverse psychology.’ I immediately knew I wanted to do something with him,” says Daniels, whose credits include “The Simpsons” and “King of the Hill.”

“Greg happened to see me at the Improv in L.A., and I had a very good night,” Mr. Novak recalled. “I remember he liked a line I had: ‘I spent four years in college. I didn’t learn a thing. It was really my own fault. I had a double major in psychology and reverse psychology.’ ”
