“If we lie to Congress, it’s a felony and if Congress lies to us it’s just politics”

“If we lie to the Congress, it’s a felony and if the Congress lies to us it’s just politics” was written by Ken Huber of Tawas City, Michigan, and published in the Iosco County News Herald on June 9, 2010. Huber’s “What Has America Become?” editorial opinion quickly went viral on the Internet.

The sentiment of the saying is much older. Variations of the “lie to Congress because Congress lies to you” saying appeared in 1987 and 1989 in regard to Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North’s testimony before Congress in the Iran-Contra affair.

2 December 1987, Gettysburg (PA) Times, “On premature talk of pardons” by James J. Kilpatrick, pg. 4A, cols. 3-4:
It is a felony tp lie to Congress, whether or not a witness is under oath, but no one ever has been convicted on such a charge. A trial jury, aware ofthe lies that Congress tells the people, might well conclude that turnabout is fair play.

22 February 1989, Gettysburg (PA) Times, “North seen as patriot, liar as Iran-Contra trial begins,” pg. 1, col. 4:
“You will hear he considers himself a patriotic person, but there is no higher patriotic purpose than to protect our system of government,” Keker said. “To lie to Congress because you mistrust it then is a crime and not a defense.”
(Prosecutor John Keker on Oliver North—ed.)

Pg. 340:
To lie to Congress is a crime
That generates much fuss,
But it’s a hallowed passage rite
When Congress lies to us.

How, then, to explain the Oliver North phenomenon? Here’s a man who was convicted of lying to Congress, and who escaped prison only because of one of those constitutional “technicalities” -  the Fifth Amendment - that he would ordinarily deplore, and whose line is now that it’s okay to lie to Congress because Congress lies to the people. Yet he’s become a political savior to people who so sincerely believe themselves to be God-fearing that they shouldn’t want to be anywhere near North during a thunderstorm.

Has America become the land of the special interest and home of the double standard?

Let’s see: If we lie to the Congress it’s a felony and if the Congress lies to us it’s just politics.

Like someone said….if you lie to congress you go to jail, if congress lies to us it’s just politics. There needs to be accountability and discipline for what these bastards say and do.

What Has America Become?
“What Has America Become” was the title of a letter to the editior written by Ken Huber of Tawas City, Michigan. It contains a series of comparisons and contrasts which causes one to think about the double-standards and conditions under which we now live here in America.
A reprint of the article has been circulating online finding its way to Fort Worth and possibly all over the nation. It was originally printed in the Iosco County News Herald on June 9, 2010, published in the Opinion column.

A fellow from Tawas City, Michigan, expressed a political sentiment about what he thought America has become.  His thoughts on that matter were published on July 9th this year in an opinion piece in the Iosco County News. His declaration of political demise in America even reached San Diego.

Rolling around the internet is a letter to a newspaper’s editorial page entitled, “What Has America Become?”  One line in it is particularly cogent regarding the current fight over raising taxes or not.  The writer states, “Let’s see: if we lie to Congress, it’s a felony and if Congress lies to us it’s just politics.”

If you lie to Congress it’s a felony crime.
If Congress lies to everyone it’s another day at the office.
