“I’ll be Irish in a few beers”

“I’ll be Irish in a few beers” (a pun on “in a few years”) is a jocular one-line saying that has been printed on several images. “Let everybody know you’re ready for St. Patty’s day with this ‘I’ll be Irish in a few beers’ T-shirt!” was posted on Twitter on March 3, 2009.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) issued complaints to retailers in January 2014 about “I’ll be Irish in a few beers” sale items, stating that it promotes a negative stereotype of Irish people.

6 November 2012, Indian Express (Mumbai), “Irish Cheer” by Paul Debiani:
‘I’ll be Irish in a few beers,’ reads a poster outside the newly-launched Irish-themed pub, The Irish House. It is with this promise that the Irish House experience travels to Pune from Mumbai, bringing images of frothy beer, shamrocks and leprechauns.

22 January 2014, Irish Voice (New York, NY), “AOH Says Sale of Insulting Irish Items Getting Worse” by Cahir O’Doherty, pg. 10:
NEIL Cosgrove, the national anti-defamation chairman of the AOH, is calling on Bed Bath & Beyond to immediately stop selling, through its Christmas Tree Shops chain of stores, items that he says are deeply defaming to Irish Americans.

“We’re seeing the same denigration of Irish Americans though stereotyping that we saw last year,” Cosgrove told the Irish Voice.

“One of our members saw beer glasses on sale in Bed, Bath & Beyond with the legend ‘I’ll be Irish in a few beers.’
