“It doesn’t matter if you win or lose. What matters is if I win or lose”

“It matters not whether you win or lose; what matters is whether I win or lose,” a modern sports adage says. The saying was credited to “Darrin Weinberg” in 1985 and to “Darin Weinberg” in 1988. The spelling of the first name is uncertain, as is Weinberg’s identity.

It doesn’t matter if you win or lose. What matters is if *I* win or lose.
