“One bite means a binge”

The book Food for Thought: Daily Meditations for Overeaters (1992; first edition 1980), by Elizabeth L. and published by the Hazelden Foundation, contains a much-cited passage:

“One Bite Means a Binge
By this time, we know that we do not overeat moderately. One extra compulsive bite sooner or later becomes a binge.  One extra compulsive bite sooner or later becomes a binge. Keeping this fact firmly planted in our consciousness prevents us from deluding ourselves into disaster. For us, there is abstinence or there is chaos. Nothing in between.”

The saying is popular with overeaters and has been said to have been used by the organization Overeaters Anonymous.

Didi P.S. Overeaters Anonymous has a saying—“A bite means a binge”. Maybe there are some who can take a little taste and stop at that. Unfortunately I am not one of them. Complete abstinence from unhealthful food is the only thing that works for me.
