People’s News Network (Twitter nickname)

Twitter is an online networking serivce for short messages. “Twitter = The People’s News Network” was posted on Twitter on May 1, 2011, after it first made news on Twitter that Osama bin Laden had been killed. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey called his company a “People’s News Network” in a memo that was published on Bloomberg News on October 10, 2016.

Some Twitter users said that it could be a ‘People’s News Network” if it didn’t censor and shadowban certain users and opinions.

Other networks have also infrequently used the title. “Next News Network. The People’s News Network” was posted on Twitter on December 18, 2012. “INFOWARS IS THE PEOPLE’S NEWS NETWORK” was posted on Twitter on September 5, 2016.

Twitter Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey has a message for his employees as the company’s conversations about a possible sale falter—“We can do this!”

In an internal memo, sent last week and obtained by Bloomberg on Monday, Dorsey doesn’t mention potential deals. Instead, he rallied the team around Twitter’s “live” strategy, saying the company is the “people’s news network.” Twitter is already the fastest place to get information— now it needs to be the first place people check to see what’s happening, the executive wrote.

By Liana B. Baker | SAN FRANCISCO
Twitter Inc Chief Executive Jack Dorsey defined one of the company’s missions as being the “people’s news network,” according to an internal memo seen on Monday.

The 10-year-old social networking service has long struggled to define its core purpose and is under the spotlight as it explores selling itself in a process that has attracted potential buyers such as Salesforce.com.

Jack Dorsey calls Twitter the ‘people’s news network’
It’s a platform for ‘news and talk,’ not a social network.

One of the reasons that Twitter has struggled with its investors is because nobody, not even its leaders, really knows what Twitter is for. In a memo sent around to employees, CEO Jack Dorsey seems to have stumbled across his vision for the embattled company. The note, which was sent to celebrate a year running the company, describes the site as “the people’s news network,” with a combination of “news and talk.”

The document was procured by Bloomberg, which has been posting regular stories about Twitter’s internal problems.
