“Republicans campaign like Libertarians and govern like Democrats”

Libertarian presidential candidate Harry Browne (1933-2006) said in October 2005, “Republicans campaign like Libertarians and govern like Democrats.” That is, Republicans campaign on a limited government platform (like Libertarians), but govern by massively expanding government (like Democrats).

“Republicans campaign like Libertarians - but govern like Democrats. If you want a Libertarian you need to vote for one” was cited on Twitter on December 12, 2014.

Browne, 62, is an investment adviser and a resident of Nashville, Tenn. He has written eight books on finances and Libertarian philosophy. A new book, “Why Government Doesn’t Work,” is due to be published late this month.
