“Shopping is my cardio”

“Shopping is my cardio” and “Shopping counts as cardio” are jocular sayings that have been printed on many images. The character of Carrie Bradshaw in the American romantic comedy television series Sex and the City said in the “Baby, Talk Is Cheap” episode that aired July 1, 2001:

MIRANDA HOBBES: You can shop online!
CARRIE BRADSHAW: No, shopping is my cardio.

“Shopping is my cardio” has been trademarked.

“Sweating while you shop counts as exercise” is a similar saying. “Sex is my cardio. Which probably explains why I’m fat” is a related “cardio” saying.

Wikipedia: Sex and the City
Sex and the City is an American romantic comedy television series created by Darren Star and produced by HBO. Broadcast from 1998 until 2004, the original run of the show had a total of 94 episodes. Throughout its six-year run, the show received contributions from various producers, writers and directors, perhaps most significantly from Michael Patrick King.

Set and filmed in New York City and based on the 1997 book of the same name by Candace Bushnell, the show follows the lives of a group of four women—three in their mid-thirties and one in her forties—who, despite their different natures and ever-changing sex lives, remain inseparable and confide in each other. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker (as Carrie Bradshaw), Kim Cattrall (as Samantha Jones), Kristin Davis (as Charlotte York), and Cynthia Nixon (as Miranda Hobbes), the quirky series had multiple continuing storylines that tackled relevant and modern social issues such as sexuality, safe sex, promiscuity and femininity, while exploring the difference between friendships and romantic relationships.

I’m reminded of one of my favorite lines from Sex and the City, “Shopping is my cardio!”

21 February 2004, National Post (Don Mills, ON), “But no pink tutu: Sex and the City duds bring big bucks at on-line charity auction” by Siri Agrell, pg. SP5:
Together, the first two Sex and the City auctions raised US$35,000. But as much as I’d like a pair of yellow heels, I shall live by the words of Carrie Bradshaw: “I can’t shop on line. Shopping’s my cardio.”

1 March 2004, WWD (WWD Los Angeles supplement), “New Lines,” pg. 21, col. 1:
Dallas-based 24-7STAR is a contemporary T-shirt “statement line with a big California influence,” according to owner, designer and L.A. native Linda Cooper. The most popular statement by far has been “Shopping Is My Cardio.”

29 May 2004, St. Petersburg (FL) Times, “Without Ikea and Expo, where can the hip shop?” by Sandra Thompson, pg. 1B:
“Shopping is my cardio” is the message on a tank top at Imagine That, a little boutique on S Manhattan Avenue, but it may as well be the mantra for shopaholics everywhere.

Shopping is something like a sport for young women (“Shopping is my cardio,” goes Carrie’s T-shirt-worthy quip from Sex and the City), part competition (“They want to be the best-dressed person in their groups,” says McCament) and part competition (“THey want to be the best-dressed person in their groups,” says McCament) and part socializing.
