South By or Southby (South by Southwest or SXSW)

Austin’s “South by Southwest” festival (since 1987) is often referred to by its initials (SXSW). In the 2000s, the festival grew very large, expanding beyond indie bands to include film and new media.

“South by Southwest” (SXSW) was called “South By” (or “SouthBy” or “Southby”) by at least the 2010 festival, when the nickname was reported in an Austin (TX) American-Statesman editorial.

Wikipedia: South by Southwest
South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of interactive, film, and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring in Austin, Texas. SXSW first began in 1987 and is centered on the downtown Austin Convention Center. Each of the three parts runs relatively independently, with different start and end dates.

This is probably a good thing as SXSW is on this weekend and maybe it’ll be better to launch after SXSW. I will not be attending SXSW, so I’ll have to endure all the SouthBy chatter this weekend

By now you’ve noticed downtown streets teeming with people, bicycles and cars. Congestion is greater than usual, and you’re asking what’s up with that? It’s South by Southwest or “South By,” as it has been nicknamed by the cool set. Let’s show our 100,000 guests Austin hospitality.

No funny business today.  Every March, swarm of bands, companies and filmmakers descends upon Austin looking to make a name for themselves, connect with their markets or flat-out rawk face!

Why SXSW Sucks

It truly pains me that my women friends and I are no longer safe to walk down the streets in Austin when South By is going on.

Hi Jolie,
This was my second SouthBy, and the crowds this year definitely changed the dynamic.
