South Dallas (North Austin nickname)

North Austin is a place of suburban shopping centers, like the Arboretum and the Domain. Some people claim that North Austin doesn’t have the artistic, bohemian feel of South Austin. North Austin has been called “South Dallas” since the 1990s, when suburban development hit the area.

Northwest—There is no lack of malls in Austin. In the northwest, three upscale shopping centers, The Arboretum, The Arboretum Market, and The Gateway complex (consisting of the Gateway Courtyard, the Gateway Market, and Gateway Square) have earned the area the nickname “South Dallas.”

... like the flavor of real neighborhood Tex-Mex, go back to Dallas, or go visit some of those chain restaurants in South Dallas, er, I mean Far North Austin.

Personally, I stay the heck out of that South Dallas,  errr, I mean North Austin Yuppie filled Suburban hellhole of bad traffic, overdone women and evil attitudes.

Finally, north Austin is not so much Austin as a rapidly growing suburban conglomeration of several conservative small towns that are now touching at their edge neighborhoods. Other than it’s geographic proximity, north Austin has very little tying it Austin, culturally or spiritually. I call it “South Dallas.”

I’d much rather work downtown than in some steel and glass monstrosity somewhere in the cultural wastelands of South Dallas (North Austin).

Naming my Cat - 30 Apr 2004
Last Saturday, I went and did it. I got me a kitten. Didn’t have a plan to landscape my backyard or finish the trim in my living room or fiddle with my motorcycle, and was wandering around a South Dallas (what others like to call North “Austin”) Barnes and Noble with Jean Wang, and she informed me that she knew someone in Pflugerville who wanted to unload some kittens.

Austin Chronicle (September 29, 2006)
After months of hearing disgruntled local restaurateurs grumble about the “South Dallas” development in the Second Street District around the new City Hall, we were relieved to finally hear about a local independent business getting the opportunity to flourish in Austin’s revitalized urban core

My husband and I have for years called north Austin “South Dallas” because you can drive across it on strip-mall parking lots.

South Austin is a little easier to define and I agree with Tarvin, the river is the boundary.

Mopac seperates West Austin and Campus/Central.

I disagree with -M, north of 51st isn’t South Dallas, but I would call it the begining of North Austin…the Arboretum is more like South Dallas.

It happened far enough in North Austin (which I consider to be South Dallas) that I really don’t mind it, outta sight and outta mind and all that.

The Domain is simply an extension of the Arboretum and its North Dallas/Addison feel..

I got out of Austin without mishap. As I pedaled up the 183 service road through “South Dallas” (North Austin Mega-Mall-Land), I didn’t even detect any irate drivers!

North Austin beer drinkers have it made

In North Austin, however, we are spoilt for choice. We can start out north of the university at Crown & Anchor and make our way up to Opal Divine’s Marina (in what I would consider to be south Dallas), with several quality options of beer hangouts that aren’t overly crowded.
