Speakstakes (Speaker + sweepstakes)

A “Veepstakes” (Veep + sweepstakes) is a race for vice president. A “Speakstakes” (Speaker + sweepstakes) is a race for a Speaker position, such as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh headlined his talk on October 23, 2015: “Speakstakes: Paul Ryan Situation Remains Murky.” The headline was frequently cited on blogs and on Twitter.

Wikipedia: Speaker of the United States House of Representatives
The Speaker of the House is the presiding officer of the United States House of Representatives. The office was established in 1789 by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, which states in part, “The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker…”

The Constitution does not require that the Speaker be an elected House Representative, though every Speaker so far has been an elected Member of Congress.

The Speaker is second in the United States presidential line of succession, after the Vice President and ahead of the President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate.

Speakstakes: Paul Ryan Situation Remains Murky

RUSH: Okay, on the Paul Ryan for speaker of the House situation. This remains fluid, and it remains somewhat murky, a little confusing.  Here is the latest that I had in the Drive-By Media about this.  Reuters story: “Paul Ryan Announces Candidacy for House Speaker—Republican Representative Paul Ryan officially jumped into the race for speaker of the US House of Representatives on Thursday after nailing down crucial endorsements from conservative and moderate factions.”
