Spellebrity (spelling bee + celebrity)

“Spellebrity” (“spelling bee” + celebrity) refers to a notable contestant in a spelling bee, such as the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The E.W. Scripps Company trademarked “spellebrity” with a claimed first use on May 27, 2012.

Fifty of the original 278 spellers remain in the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee, but Thursday night a winner walks away with a $30,000 cash prize, a $5,000 scholarship, and a Nook Color tablet. But most important — a championship.
 
Sportsmanship is obvious as the “spellebrities” exchange thumbs-ups and high-fives on stage throughout the tournament.
