“When Newton was quarantined due to the plague, he invented calculus”

It has been pointed out, during the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic and at other times, that some people have used isolation to great advantage. “Happy birthday to Isaac Newton, who, at the age of 26, invented calculus because his school was closed due to the plague, and he was bored” was posted on Twitter by Carey Ahr on December 25, 2011. “When Isaac Newton was quarantined, he invented calculus. When Shakespeare was quarantined because of the plague, he wrote ‘King Lear.’ When I had to stay home in high school because I had mono, I watched ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ and ‘The Price Is Right’” was posted on Twitter by John Kelly on March 14, 2020.

This Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726) fact is sometimes made into a joke about calculus. “When Newton was quarantined due to the plague, he invented calculus. Any idea how bored you have to be to invent calculus?!” was posted on Facebook by Bubble & Squeak Craft Beer and Wine on April 4, 2020. “Think 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 bored? Sir Isaac Newton invented calculus during a plague. You know how bored you have to be to invent calculus?” was posted on Facebook by American Conservative Voice on April 12, 2020.

Good news for everyone worried about #coronavirus: Isaac Newton developed the law of gravitation, invented calculus, and discovered the three laws of motion all during the 2 years that his university was closed due to the plague!

I would point out that Isaac Newton “self-isolated” in 1666 when the plague hit Cambridge. He discovered the laws of Gravity, invented calculus and made startling discoveries in optics.
