“The best players win Most Valuable Player awards; the best teams win championships” is a popular saying in many sports. It’s not known who first said it. “The best players win MVP’s; the best teams win championships” was said in 2010 about LeBron James, who had been voted the NBA MVP in 2009 (and again in 2010), but who wouldn’t win an NBA championship title until 2012.
In July 2014, Argentina’s Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball Award as the best player in the World Cup tournament, but his team lost the World Cup to Germany. “The old saying of the best players win games but the best teams win tournaments has just come true” was written on Twitter on July 13, 2014.
