“The great thing about democracy is that it gives every voter a chance to do something stupid”

“The great thing about democracy is that it gives every voter a chance to do something stupid” is a political saying that has been printed on many images. San Francisco (CA) Examiner sports columnist Art Spander wrote this in a November 1990 column about ballot proposals for a stadium for baseball’s San Francisco Giants.

Arthur Melvin Spander is an award-winning American sports writer. He is a free-lance columnist for the San Francisco Examiner.

In 1999, he was awarded the McCann Award, earning him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and in 2007 he was honored with the Masters Major Achievement Award.

6 November 1990, The Post-Crescent (Appleton, WI),  “Nobody in San Francisco wants Giants” by Art Spander (San Francisco Examiner), pg. D-1, col. 1:
If it’s November, it’s time for California cities to vote on the Giants again. Last year, San Francisco didn’t want them. This year, the polls say Santa Clara doesn’t want them. Next year, Fresno probably won’t want them.

And that’s the great thing about democracy. It gives every registered voter a chance to do something stupid.
