After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991-92, there was a joke that the only communists left in the world could be found in China, Cuba, North Korea, and on American university campuses. The joke appears to date in print to at least 1992 and is of unknown authorship.

The Soviet Union had a single-party political system dominated by the Communist Party until 1990. Although the USSR was nominally a union of Soviet republics (15 in all after 1956) with the capital in Moscow, it was actually a highly centralized state with a planned economy.

In a letter published Saturday , D.M. Miller identified Cuba, Venezuela and American college faculties as the only communists left in the world.
 
Faculty at American colleges are not communists. They may not have a viewpoint that is as right-wing as one would like, but, in a democracy, they are entitled to their beliefs.
